Football v Homophobia matchday

Football is at its best when it brings people together, everyone together. That is why the Football v Homophobia (FvH) campaign and its annual Month of Action remain so important. It exists because discrimination and exclusion still persist within the game. FvH challenges this reality and calls on everyone involved in football to help create a culture built on respect, visibility and belonging.

The campaign focuses on education, awareness and meaningful, lasting change. Throughout the Month of Action, clubs, foundations and supporters are encouraged to show visible support, challenge discriminatory language and behaviour, and promote positive conversations and inclusive activity. Crucially, FvH is not about a single gesture or one month of activity. It is about embedding equality into the everyday culture of football so that LGBTQ+ people can participate, support and work in the game without fear of prejudice.

By supporting FvH, Sheffield United demonstrates that its values are not just words, but principles that define the club. Together, we cannot be United unless we unite EVERY BLADE!

Jon Holmes from Football v Homophobia said, “All of us at FvH are extremely appreciative of Sheffield United’s ongoing inclusion work and anti-discrimination activity. The Community Foundation’s recent success at our awards, which recognise outstanding achievements in LGBTQ football, follows that of the club and Rainbow Blades in recent seasons. Thank you to everyone involved. It is fantastic to be part of tonight’s celebrations.”

Jack Lopez, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at the club, added: “It’s super important that the club support and engage with FvH. While February links with EFL campaigns and LGBT+ History Month, the year-long approach helps us commit to continuous progress beyond one moment, ensuring safety and belonging for all queer players, staff and supporters - SUFC is and should be for everyone”

James Laley, Rainbow Blades Founder and Chair, said: “February remains a key month, but our work with FvH, the club and Sheffield United Community Foundation continues year-round. One major highlight has been the launch of our LGBT+ inclusive football sessions, creating welcoming spaces for everyone to enjoy playing the game.”
