Breaking Barriers in Football:
Inclusive Sessions Support LGBTQ+ Players

Rainbow Blades, in partnership with Sheffield United Community Foundation, has been delivering inclusive sessions in the city.

Many LGBTQ+ individuals struggle with finding a welcoming sporting atmosphere, and we’ve worked with Sheffield United Community Foundation to provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to enjoy the beautiful game.

In the past, many people have felt excluded from activities like football due to a range of reasons – from gender identity and sexuality, to simply not feeling like they fit in. This session gives all people, no matter their background, the opportunity to play football without fear of judgement or discrimination.

The session takes place fortnightly at Leisure United Woodbourn Road (S9 3HL) on Mondays, 6-7pm, and focuses on enjoyment, teamwork and community rather than competition.

So far, the sessions have attracted a diverse group of participants, from seasoned players to those returning to football after years away, all united by a shared desire to reconnect with football in a welcoming environment.

Harper, a trans and queer player, shared:

“I stopped playing football after coming out. The sessions have provided a safe space for LGBTQ+ people, and no matter what your experience or quality, everyone is welcome and involved. The environment is friendly, and as an autistic person, I find it especially comfortable. The fact that it’s free makes it accessible, and the mix of quality and experience keeps it fun and engaging.”

Dan, a returning player, said:

“I played football in my teens but left that team because of the bad energy, egos and machismo. I haven’t played since. The sessions have offered me what I’ve wanted for so long, no expectations, no judgement, no bad energy football. I’m so glad it’s given me the ability to play again and enjoy myself so much.”

An anonymous participant reflected:

“My relationship with football soured after my grandpa couldn’t visit me anymore. The only team around was boys-only and became increasingly hostile towards girls. I joined the inclusive football sessions to support my friend, but was so glad I had and after that first session – I ended up going just for me. It’s the first time I’ve felt truly welcome in the sport. James Laley (Rainbow Blades) was especially welcoming and helped put new members at ease. I’ve since moved cities, but I’ll always be grateful for the experience.”

It’s been great to see how much impact the sessions are having on our participants, and we’d love to have more people come and join us.
