Football without barriers.

After the recent success of the Rainbow Blades Football v Homophobia tournament, I decided to attend one of the Rainbow Blades/Sheffield United Community Foundation Monday night inclusive football sessions. What was so enlightening was how evident is it that these sessions are more than football, they’re about building connection and confidence and giving LGBTQ+ people and their allies the opportunity to enjoy the game in an environment where they feel they belong.
After a month-long campaign surrounding Football v Homophobia, we know homophobia in the sport is still around, what these sessions allow is individuals to play the sport they love whilst quietly advocating from change within. What a breath of fresh air it was to see that individuals who were previously excluded and marginalised from the game, have a space where they can play, compete, and have real visibility. I will be attending for a long time to come and feel incredibly privileged to be part of something that celebrates everyone in its football community.
