Why inclusive sport matters

I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia, a disorder which affects movement & co-ordination, when I was about 7 years old. I wasn’t particularly ‘sporty’ - I struggled to throw & catch, and loathed PE. I played a bit of football outside of school but there weren’t many girls football groups available to join at that time. Thankfully the opportunities for girls have massively improved in the years since, although for our Trans and non-binary siblings access is being severely limited.
I joined my local Roller Derby team, Hallam Hellcats in 2018, mainly to learn how to roller skate, however I quickly found I had a competitive streak. More importantly, I found a community of people who encouraged and accepted me for who I am.
Having space to play sport, whilst being unapologetically myself has boosted my confidence and self-esteem massively. I’m particularly proud to be playing a sport which is fiercely LGBT+ inclusive.
If your new year’s resolution is to get more active, I would encourage you to look at the opportunities around Sheffield. There are lots of inclusive sports groups who would welcome you with open arms. Including of course, LGBT+ football sessions run by Sheffield United Community Foundation & Rainbow Blades.
