Sheff Utd is an indispensable part of Sheffield life and Rainbow Blades is an indisputable part of Sheff Utd’s fabric and modern history

Today’s column is by William Lee, part of the Rainbow Blades committee.

I grew up watching United greats like Monty, Petr Ndlovu, Jags, Pesch and Morgs with my dad. He’s had a season ticket on the Kop for 60 years.

Sheff Utd is an indispensable part of Sheffield life and Rainbow Blades is an indisputable part of Sheff Utd’s fabric and modern history, just like the Greasy Chip Butty, Billy Sharp, Basham arriving, Sirs Neil and Chris and the late greats Maddy Cusack and George Baldock. There’s something extremely special about this club and Rainbow Blades is something that I know so many Blades are enormously proud of.

Like many, I’ve heard homophobic comments at Bramall Lane and other football grounds but in eternal words of Bob Dylan, the times they are a’changing. Ignorance and bigotry are no longer tolerated and it’s up to every person who calls Bramall Lane home to stand alongside the LGBT+ community. As a straight man, I’ve never felt I wasn’t welcome at Bramall Lane, but I’d be absolutely devastated if I felt unwelcome because of my sexuality, gender, ethnicity or religion. It’s time everyone felt welcome and felt part of this incredible club and we can all play our part.
